OVERALL – Black

The Gamecocks should be better next season.  They’ll have a second year quarterback, a proven play-caller, and a stout offensive line.  The hope is that young players in the backfield can contribute immediately to a run game that finished 82nd nationally a year ago.

Wide receiver will be largely unproven, but senior Shi Smith returns as a capable No. 1 option.  He’s tallied more than 1,500 career receiving yards, but he’ll need help from his fellow pass catchers.  The tight end position may be able to provide that help and give Ryan Hilinski a reliable safety outlet.

The defense should be fine, though replacing Javon Kinlaw and DJ Wonnum will be tough.  Young linemen will need to step up, but the secondary and linebacking corps should be able to hide some pass rushing deficiencies.

Special teams will again be a solid, but finding a new punter is crucial.  Parker White will be his reliable self at placekicker when the season kicks off.

Coaching is what will set this team apart from last year’s group.  The addition of Mike Bobo will give the offense a boost, and will help with Hilinski’s progression as he enters his sophomore campaign.  Adding seasoned veterans to the staff will benefit players at many positions.

Overall, look for the Gamecocks to improve as a team and get back to a bowl game at the conclusion of the ’20 season.
