South Carolina Football: Top 5 Quarterbacks on Gamecocks’ Schedule
By Jacob Elsey
#1. TREVOR LAWRENCE
Lawrence ranks as the top quarterback on the Gamecocks’ schedule, and quite possibly the top signal caller in all of college football. SportingNews ranks him as so, along with many NFL mock drafts that believe he’ll be the top selection in 2021.
The Georgia native has been incredible in his first two seasons on campus, leading the Tigers to a 25-1 record as a starter, and two national title appearances. He finished seventh in last year’s Heisman voting, and has posted 3,000-yard seasons in each of the last two years. Lawrence has thrown 66 touchdowns to just 12 career interceptions, and he’s rushed for another 10.
The junior-to-be broke onto the scene in 2018, when he helped Clemson dismantle Alabama in the title game. He had some turnover issues early in 2019, but righted the ship and got the Tigers back to the playoff, where’d they’d fall to LSU.
The Gamecocks are 0-2 vs. Lawrence, and neither game has been particularly close. As a freshman, he was in a 56-35 shootout with former Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley, and last season the Gamecocks couldn’t muster any offense in a 38-3 setback. In those two games, the quarterback has thrown for nearly 700 yards, completing over 70% of his passes. He’s added 108 yards on the ground and accounted for four touchdowns.
Lawrence will be the final quarterback matchup of the regular season, bringing a schedule full of top flight passers to a close. The Gamecocks will certainly have their hands full in defending these signal callers week in and week out.
