ESPN has released its FPI projections for the upcoming college football season, and it looks for the South Carolina football team to show improvement next year.  The FPI is a mathematical tool that measures a team’s strength and attempts to forecast how they’ll fare against the foes on its schedule.

The algorithm predicts that the Gamecocks will end the regular season at 6-6, with a bowl game to follow.

This falls in line with recent projections from the experts in Vegas, who’ve set South Carolina’s over/under win total at 5.5.

The FPI ranks Carolina as the 39th best team in the country.  Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, there are seven teams on the schedule that rank higher.  That includes five of the top 15 teams in the nation.

Here’s the South Carolina profile and a game-by-game breakdown of the Gamecocks’ chances according to ESPN:

South Carolina (39):

FPI (RK)                                               6.7 (39)
Projected W-L                                   5.8 – 6.2 (80)
Chance of winning out                    0.0%
Chance of winning conference     0.1%
