South Carolina Football: 10 Opponents the Gamecocks Should Consider Scheduling
By Jacob Elsey
FLORIDA STATE
The Gamecocks and Seminoles have met on the gridiron 19 times, with the most recent being in the 2010 Peach Bowl. That matchup pitted Steve Spurrier against now-Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher, with Florida State coming out on top 26-17. The last regular season meeting was back in 1991, which is hard to believe seeing that Carolina has played Miami, Florida, South Florida, Central Florida, and Florida Atlantic in that time span.
The Seminoles have a rich football history, with three Heisman winners and three national championships. It would be a high-profile matchup between the two, and would restore a rivalry that was very active in the 70s and 80s before the Gamecocks joined the SEC. Some of those games included all-time greats like George Rogers, Sterling Sharpe, and Deion Sanders (whose son now plays in Columbia). South Carolina fans would be more than happy to see FSU back on the schedule and make the seven-hour trek down to Tallahassee for a weekend.
