Today October 13th Steve Spurrier officially announced his retirement as the Head Ball Coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks. It was a big time event with a live broadcast of the press conference showing on SportsCenter.
In Spurrier’s opening comments the Head Ball Coach came out with his usual Spurrier-esk remarks and let it be known this was a resignation not a retirement.
“First of all, I’m resigning, I’m not retiring,” said Spurrier, “I doubt I’ll coach a college team again, but maybe a high school team.”
The Old Ball Coach let it be known why he was deciding to step down at this time instead of waiting for the rest of the season.
“It gives us a chance to hire an interim coach, gives him a chance to make his mark for these next six games. I think the team needs to hear a new message, a new voice from another coach. Shawn is going to do that, and I think he’s going to do an outstanding job.”

He went on to talk about how he was hurting recruiting and how that was another reason he felt like he needed to resign. “Yesterday, I was sort of a recruiting liability,” Spurrier went on to say “With a new coach here, I think it really is going to pick up recruiting. I really believe that.”
Like the fans, Spurrier noted how he wish he could have gone out on top and brought South Carolina a SEC Championship, he said, “I planned on being on the shoulders of the team coming out of the Georgia Dome with an SEC Championship.”
In his closing comments Spurrier gave some words of reflection on his career saying, “Nothing goes on forever. I’ve gone on a lot longer than most people. I’ve been blessed way beyond my wildest expectations. It’s time to take on the adventure of the next part of my life.”
Steve Spurrier did what only he could do with his last closing statement before walking off the stage by quickly saying, “Okay, let’s get moving. I’ve had enough here.” And then just like that the Steve Spurrier Era is over for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Sitting here writing my last article about the Head Ball Coach that will recap Steve Spurrier’s press conference for the Gamecocks i’d like to speak on behalf of all Gamecock fans and say thank you Coach. Through all the ups and downs that made us proud to call our selves Gamecocks.
The amazing changes in Williams-Brice, our attitude and our standard for winning is all because of you. The memories of beating Florida in the Swamp, 3 straight 11 win seasons or beating Clemson 5 straight years wouldn’t have happen without you. From Gamecock fans all over we say to you Forever To Thee HBC.
