South Carolina Gamecocks could rewrite history, but not how they’d like

Since 2011, South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has somehow seemed to find every crazy statistic or information regarding rewriting or making history since coming to Columbia.

With this current team, many are probably scratching their heads and wondering what type of history is this current team rewriting. Unfortunately, the historic record at stake here concerns the Gamecocks last time going an entire season unranked as a top 25 team.

The last time South Carolina went without being in the top 25 for a whole season was in 2006. Of course that Steve Spurrier team had a heck of a lot better season going 8-5, winning a bowl game and most importantly beating Clemson. Now looking at this years team the Gamecocks have not been ranked once and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change.

The Gamecocks are now sitting at 2-3 with their only game they are favored to win being The Citadel. The only way South Carolina can slide in the top 25 is to win their next three games which would mean they would have to beat LSU, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. Call me crazy but I just can’t picture the Gamecocks pulling that off.

Going unranked is not the only history that could be updated for Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks. The Gamecocks are in serious concern to not win no more than five games this season. South Carolina has not gone a season winning less than five games since 1999 when the Gamecocks were coached by Lou Holtz, and went winless, finishing 0-11.

This is never the type of history a team wants to rewrite but the way things are going this might just be the case for Steve Spurrier and our South Carolina Gamecocks. The standards for our program have been set higher, we should not expect anything less than a ten win regular season. That is the type of attitude that a successful program needs to have from the fans all the way to the coaches. That attitude doesn’t seem to be in us and it doesn’t help with making excuses.

There needs to be some kind of change, whether it’s in the staff or attitude but we have to get past our excuse of saying “wait till next year”.
