Five Games the South Carolina Gamecocks Can Still Win

Citadel Bulldogs
Arguably the easiest opponent (UCF lost to Furman, so it’s arguable) left on the board for the Gamecocks, this is a game that the Gamecocks should always win. No SEC program should ever lose to an FCS opponent. There is no exception to that rule (not even Vanderbilt)!
Unfortunately, many Gamecock fans remember what happened when South Carolina played the Citadel in 1990. One of the South Carolina coaches remembers it quite well also. After all, it was Everette Sands that helped lead that 1990 Citadel Bulldogs team to a victory over the Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Here’s the bad news for Citadel faithful. This isn’t 1990. This is Steve Spurrier and a Gamecock team that has far more talent now than it ever did in the 1990’s. Despite the troubles the Gamecocks have seen on both sides of the ball, this team just isn’t going to lose to the Citadel. The last time Citadel came to town was 2011 and they left with a 41-20 defeat.
So far this season, the Citadel is 2-1 on the season, blowing out both Davidson and Western Carolina and being blown out by Georgia Southern. South Carolina will be the biggest named opponent on the Citadel’s schedule this season, so there is no doubt they will be excited and prepared coming into the game. As excited and prepared as they may be though, I expect a similar outcome to 2011.
