The South Carolina Gamecocks got obliterated in Athens, Georgia on Saturday night by the Georgia Bulldogs. In a game that seemed reasonably close at halftime by the score (24-13), it never actually was. The Bulldogs scored on every one of their possessions in the first half and went on to win by a final tally of 52-20. Here are five key plays from the game.

  1. Georgia makes the lead 17-3 in the 2nd quarter of the game off a Sony Michel touchdown. In fact, Sony Michel provided most of the offense on the drive gaining 57 of the 88 yards Georgia gained on the drive. He capped off with a 21 yard touchdown run.
  2. The Gamecocks were able to score a touchdown to cut the lead to 17-10 late in the second half. Georgia didn’t need very much time to go back down the field and Lambert through the game winning touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell with 17 seconds left on the clock.
  3. The Gamecocks were able to go into the half down 24-13 thanks to a beautiful kick-off return by Shon Carson. Georgia gave South Carolina 15 more yards thanks to a face mask. Elliott Fry kicked a 51 yard field goal with no time left on the clock that left Spurrier leaping for joy on the sideline.
  4. Georgia immediately came out and scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the third quarter. Nick Chubb broke off a 31 yard run that set up Sony Michel for an 11 yard touchdown reception bringing the score to 31-13.
  5. Georgia picked off a pass on the very next Gamecocks possession. The 33 yard return left Georgia in the redzone on the 11 yard line, and you’ll never guess who scored on the next play. No, not Nick Chubb. Sony Michel off another 11 yard reception for a touchdown. This sealed the deal for Georgia completely deflating any confidence or hope that was left on the Gamecocks sideline.

The Gamecocks look to get back on track and work out some of the problems against Central Florida on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.
