TJ Gurley, Jasper Sasser, and Toure Boyd

The Gamecocks may spend a little more time in the Nickel formation against North Carolina in an effort to combat the heavy pass offense the Tarheels utilize. The starter at the position is TJ Gurley, and he will be backed up by Jasper Sasser and Toure Boyd.

Gurley was a 3-star recruit in the class of 2012 according to the 247Sports Composite. He committed to the Gamecocks over offers from Tennessee, Mississippi State, Arkansas, and others.

Last season, Gurley was second on the team in tackles with 80. He has played in 34 games in his career and made 14 starts. He has a total of 113 tackles and a pair of interceptions. He was also named to the Freshman All-SEC team in 2012.

Sasser was a 3-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite. He committed to South Carolina in the class of 2013 over offers from Clemson, NC State, and Stanford. Sasser redshirted his first season and played in 9 games last season primarily on special teams. He was also responsible for recovering the field goal blocked by Carlton Heard against Florida last season. So far he has no recorded statistics.

Toure Boyd was a late enrollee after getting having a mix up with his transcripts while transferring from his junior college. He was a 3 star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite. He committed to the Gamecocks over offers from Arizona, Utah, and Washington State. The late start with the team has buried him on the depth chart, but he could see his playing time increase as he becomes more familiar with his role.
