The Gamecocks return virtually every important linebacker that was on the roster last season. This season, newly hired co-defensive coordinator (and technically head of the defense) will implement a more traditional 4-3 defense, eliminating the Spur position.
Skai Moore and Jonathan Walton are locks to start at the MIKE and WILL linebacker positions after having great 2014-15 seasons, and being the most proven duo at linebacker on the team. Both have combined for 19 starts in their careers and will be counted on to help lead the turnaround on defense.
Larenz Bryant seems to be ready to take over the SAM linebacker position despite missing part of spring practice. The Gamecocks may not see much of a drop off with players like Bryson Allen-Williams and TJ Holloman coming off the bench.
With the implementation of a new defensive scheme there have been some new things to learn. Combine that with the inability to tackle last season, there has been plenty to work on this season. With some of the best depth the Gamecocks have seen with an influx of talent from recruiting, the linebackers seem to be prepared to help turn things around and have a great season. Let’s take a look at some of the key returning players and a few to keep an eye on this season.
