After months of being ranked #1 in the nation and finishing the season 27-2 the Gamecocks journey to SEC Champion starts today. It’s been an exciting season for these women with a comeback win over Duke that seemed to fuel the level of excitement early on, wins over countless top 20 teams and an almost perfect SEC conference record until the final day of the regular season.
Regardless of all the excitement and enthusiasm that’s been behind the Lady Gamecocks the season today starts a new journey one towards the next big goal of winning in SEC championship. Today at 1 PM the women face off against Arkansas whom they beat 73-56 earlier in the season but things are never quite the same when it comes to tournament play. That is one of the hallmarks of college basketball tournament play – teams that got hot late in the season, or have hot streaks change the course of tournaments.

The Gamecocks have had a lot of success over the past few seasons however an SEC championship has still eluded them. There have been countless accolades, awards, and victories, but no banners to hang. With the team Coach Dawn Staley has assembled, anything short of finishing in that top spot will no doubt be a disappointment to them.
Tournament play starts today at 1pm in Arkansas against Arkansas. Although not their home court, they will certainly have a home-court advantage. The game will be shown on the SEC network. The winner will play tomorrow afternoon at 5pm against the winner of today’s Texas A&M versus LSU game.
