At 5-2 and riding a two-game winning streak, the Gamecocks hoped to keep the winning times rolling with a victory over the eighth-ranked Volunteers. The Vols, meanwhile, were seeking revenge after the Gamecocks beat them in Knoxville for the first time in program history. While Tennessee got out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, Carolina rattled off the next 17 to take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter, but a seventeen-point run by the visitors took the air out of the balloon and all but spoiled any hopes of an upset.
