Steve Spurrier Asked Why He Went For It On 4th and Inches, Reacts As Only HBC Can

Steve Spurrier is never short of verbal gems. Whether it’s subtle jabs at other coaches around the country or his interaction with reporters, the South Carolina Gamecocks coach usually delivers.

Take yesterday, for example. The Gamecocks were celebrating a victory over the Georgia Bulldogs, which, of course, included a 4th and inches conversion with under 90 seconds left that sealed the deal to take the Gamecocks to 2-1 and hand them an important victory in the division race.

It was a euphoric scene on the field, and perhaps Michele Steele, the ESPN reporter assigned to interview HBC after the game, may have gotten a little too caught up in the emotion. That’s probably why she asked Spurrier why he went for it. Spurrier’s response and reaction is as typical as you’d expect.

It wasn’t so much how he answered the question than it was the sheer look of shock and disbelief on his face that he was even asked the question in the first place. We’d imagine it could have turned out much worse for Steele has asked that question of some other coach, like Nick Saban.

But Spurrier gave a response that was vintage Spurrier. And that’s why Gamecocks fans love him.
