South Carolina Gamecocks Football Countdown: 50 Days

facebooktwitterreddit

Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 50 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.

Who wears #50: A.J. Cann
AJ Cann is the 6’4″ and 318 lb. starting left guard from Bamberg-Ehrhardt.  The senior is the leader on the offensive line, with not only the most starts on the team with 38 already, but team captain and All-SEC.  He’s getting a lot of attention from pro scouts and is going to represent the Gamecocks at SEC Media Day. His experience will definitely help the offense, and with only one missed start in three years, he knows what he is doing and expected to make a big impact this season.  AJ has also been named Preseason All-American along with teammate Mike Davis.

What 50 days left means:
The excitement is starting to snowball with just over seven weeks remaining till kickoff.  The preseason award watch lists continue to grow with Mike Davis, Cody Waldrop, AJ Cann, Pharoh Cooper, and Rory Anderson just some of the players already named.

Gamecock football in 1950
Record: 3-4-2
Conference:
Southern (2-4-1 in the conference)
Coach: This season with Rex Enright was a tale of two seasons, with the first half starting off 3-1-1 before finish 0-3-1. This season even included a real-life kissing your sister tie against Clemson 14-14 midway through the season. 1950 was also the last year the Gamecocks had a two-sport star until Bruce Ellington.  This is also the era of Steve Wadiak, one of the few Gamecock players to have their jersey later retired.

Also in 1950:

  • First remote control was sold by Zenith (remember that name?)
  • North Korea invades South Korea which leads to the Korean War
  • First NATO is created and the Warsaw Pact in response
  • Brazil stunned in World Cup by Uruguay, which was held in Brazil
  • “Cinderella”, “Father of the Bride” (the original one, not the Steve Martin version), “Sunset Blvd.” and “Annie Get Your Gun” were top movies
