First up: running back Mike Davis, who was named to the Maxwell Award list for the nation’s best player. (Not to be confused with the Heisman Trophy, given to the
most outstandingplayer in the country–which Davis just might be up for too in a few months.) The junior had 1,183 yards on 203 carries in 2013, adding 11 touchdowns. He also added 34 catches for 352 yards.
Also making a watch list: WR Pharoh Cooper, named to the Paul Hornung Award list for most versatile player. Cooper was third on the team last year in all-purpose yardage (202 of those yards rushing and 359 of them on kick returns) as a freshman and is being slated for much bigger performance as a sophomore.
The Maxwell Award list will be pared down in October, with finalists announced in late November and the award given out in December during ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Hornung Award will feature a fan-voting component that factors into selecting the eventual winner, which will be announced in late January.
