ICYMI: Former Gamecock Michael Roth gets called up, promptly sent down after win in relief for Angels

ICYMI is a new feature we’re trying out here at Garnet and Cocky where we try to touch on a particular story that you we may have missed over the past few days. We’ll look to do it on most Monday mornings, if not every couple of weeks or so. What other stories did we miss? Hit us up on Facebook and Twitter.

It was a whirlwind 24 hours for former South Carolina Gamecocks pitcher Michael Roth over the weekend.

On Saturday, he was hanging out with his teammates from the Arkansas Travelers (the Double-A minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). Just hours later, he was on the mound in California, pitching relief for the big club. He went two perfect innings of relief as the Angels knocked off the Houston Astros by a score of 11-5.

So what was Roth’s prize for such a tremendous showing in Anaheim? You guessed it–a trip back down to Arkansas to rejoin his teammates as they prepared to continue a three-game set against the Midland RockHounds. (Aren’t minor league team names unique and interesting?)

This wasn’t Roth’s first trip to the Show. Last April, he was promoted from Arkansas to the Angels and pitched two innings of perfect relief in a win over–in an ironic twist–the Houston Astros. Unfortunately, the good showings didn’t last: he was knocked around in a number of his other appearances before getting it settled down in another stint with the team in July.

Let’s hope Roth’s next trip up to Anaheim lasts more than a few hours.
