5 Gamecock football recruits to watch
By Rixon Lane
With South Carolina landing a pair of 2015 recruits on Thursday, the Gamecocks are looking at a class that appears it could be one of the best in recent history.
Offensive lineman Austin Clark and Jalen Henry became the 13th and 14th commits to South Carolina’s 2015 class and the Gamecocks still have several big targets out there that they are hoping to land. Here are five Gamecock recruits who fans should keep an eye on in the coming weeks and months.
Albert Huggins/Defensive End (SC)/6-3, 279-pounds
Clemson and Georgia are the leaders in the clubhouse for the four-star defensive end’s services, but the Gamecocks are also in the mix. Huggins would be another great addition to South Carolina’s front four if the Gamecocks can find a way to pry him away from the Tigers and Bulldogs.
D.J. Jones/Defensive Tackle (SC)/6-2, 310-pounds
Jones, currently at East Mississippi Community College, is originally from Wren and the Gamecocks are projected as the leading team for him. Tennessee and Clemson are also pushing for the defensive tackle, but Alabama and Auburn are also hoping to land the four-star prospect.
Dante Sawyer/Defensive End (GA)/6-2, 262-pounds
A teammate of Jones, Sawyer has already signed with the Gamecocks but had to enroll at East Mississippi C.C. Sawyer is a talented pass rusher who is expected to enroll at South Carolina in 2015, but other schools could try to lure him away before next year.
Octavis Johnson/ Cornerback (GA)/6-1, 181-pounds
It’s a border battle for the four-star cornerback, as South Carolina and Georgia are both vying to land Johnson. Clemson and Georgia Tech are also possibilities, but it appears that Johnson is likely to spend his college career playing in the SEC East.
Zack Bailey/Offensive Guard (SC)/6-5, 315-pounds
Clemson and Oregon are high on this Summerville product, but South Carolina has the inside track on getting Bailey. The in-state talent is visiting South Carolina this weekend and would be another solid offensive lineman for the Gamecocks’ 2015 class.
