Thompson entered a 14-0 game against Vandy and added a rushing score to give South Carolina a 21-0 lead. He went back in with the Gamecocks leading 28-0, but threw an interception that led to 10 unanswered Commodore points. South Carolina wound up holding off Vanderbilt for a 35-25 win.
