South Carolina Gamecocks Football Countdown: 88 Days

Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 88 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.

Who Wears #88?
#88 belongs to Drew Owens, a redshirt junior tight end from Charlotte. Owens redshirted in 2011, then missed all of the 2012 season after suffering a knee injury in the spring game. When Rory Anderson and Jerell Adams were sidelined for the 2013 season opener against North Carolina with injuries, Owens earned his first career start. He played in a total of seven games last season and is looking for more playing time in 2014.

Gamecocks football in 1988
The 1988 season was one of the most inexplicable years in Gamecock football history. South Carolina tore out of the gates with six consecutive victories, including a 23-10 win over sixth-ranked Georgia that included this remarkable one-handed touchdown catch from Robert Brooks. Then, against a Georgia Tech team that hadn’t beaten a D-1 football team in 15 games, South Carolina lost 34-0. The Gamecocks wound up going to the Liberty Bowl and losing to Indiana. Head coach Joe Morrison passed away the following February, marking the end of one of the most successful periods in Gamecock football history

Record: 8-4
Head Coach: Joe Morrison
Big Wins: Georgia

Also in 1988…
