Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 89 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.
Who Wears #89?
Junior tight end Jerrell Adams wears #89. The Pinewood native has just one career start, but has 17 catches for 277 yards in his first two seasons with the Gamecocks. Adams has three career touchdown receptions and should become a bigger part of South Carolina’s offense in 2014. The tight end was an SEC All-Freshman selection in 2012 and played in all thirteen games last year. He is expected to be the second tight end on the depth chart this season, behind Rory Anderson.
Gamecocks football in 1989
1989 marked the beginning of the Sparky Woods Era in Columbia. South Carolina opened the year 5-1-1, including an upset of 23rd-ranked Georgia in Athens, but things fell apart when quarterback Todd Ellis suffered a season-ending knee injury against N.C. State. The Gamecocks went 1-3 down the stretch, including a 45-0 thrashing at the hands of Clemson, to end Woods’s inaugural campaign with a winning record. Ellis wound up setting nearly all of South Carolina’s passing records despite missing nearly half of his senior year.
Record: 6-4-1
Head Coach: Sparky Woods
Big Wins: Georgia
