South Carolina Gamecocks Football Countdown: 92 Days

Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 92 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.

Who Wears #92?
#92 is the jersey number of Gerald Dixon Jr. Not Gerald Dixon, because that’s #44, or Gerald Dixon, who played in the early 90’s. (Confused?) We’re talking about the redshirt junior DT from Rock Hill (S.C.) Northwestern, not his half-brother, a junior DE from Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe. Dixon Jr. rung up 18 tackles and 0.5 sacks over twelve games as a redshirt sophomore and figures to be a big part of the line this year. (Just don’t confuse him with the other Gerald Dixon.)

Gamecocks football in 1992
1992 was a fairly significant year for the South Carolina Gamecocks football program as they joined all other sports (besides soccer) in a growing Southeastern Conference. They ended that season 3-5 in conference but ended the year with a win over Clemson and topped nationally-ranked Mississippi State and Tennessee. (Keep in mind that Carolina was 0-5 at the point they beat the Bulldogs and that Sparky Woods had been asked by some of his players to resign earlier that week.)
Record: 5-6 (3-5 SEC)
Head Coach: Sparky Woods
Big Wins: Mississippi State, Tennessee, Clemson

Also in 1992…
The number one song was “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men.
Aladdin was the #1 movie.
Bill Clinton was elected president for the first of his two terms.
