Five things you should know about the Columbia Regional

It’s finally time for baseball.
All the prognostications and projections are in the rearview mirror and the field for the 2014 NCAA tournament field has been set. Once again, South Carolina is hosting a regional. Gamecock fans know plenty about the garnet and black, but here are some things fans will need to know about the other squads in the Columbia Regional.
1. Ryan Thompson (Campbell) has the sixth-lowest ERA in the country.
The Camel closer has six wins and 17 saves on the season.
2. This year’s Maryland team is the winningest team in school history.
The Terrapins set a school record for wins with 36 and played for the ACC tournament championship.
3. Old Dominion has beaten Virginia, who South Carolina might meet in the super regionals.
The Monarchs knocked off the Cavaliers 8-1 on April 29th.
4. The Terrapins are making their first NCAA appearance in over 40 years.
Maryland last made a trip to the NCAA regionals in 1971.
5. Campbell’s Steven Leonard has been hit by a pitch 22 times this season.
He’s is tied for ninth in the nation in that statistic.
