South Carolina Gamecocks Football Countdown: 95 Days

Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 95 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.

Who Wears #95?
Defensive end Michael Washington, a former Marine and a 2012 transfer from South Carolina State who walked on, then participated with the scout team in 2013, will wear #95 this season. 95 was actually Gerald Dixon Jr.’s number as a freshman–but he’s been wearing #92 over the past few years. (More on Dixon Jr. on Wednesday, 92 days from kickoff.)

Gamecocks football in 1995
1995 was the last year that ties were allowed in college football, and in a stroke of irony, the Gamecocks and LSU tied 20-20 on September 30. (Overtime was introduced the very next season.) This team had no trouble beating the teams they should have beaten; it’s the games against nationally-ranked Florida and Tennessee that showed that the Gamecocks weren’t ready to consider themselves among the upper echelon of SEC teams.
Record: 4-6-1 (2-5-1)
Head Coach: Brad Scott
Big Wins: None.

Also in 1995…
The number one song was “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio.
Toy Story was the #1 movie.
The Oklahoma City bombing occurred April 19.
