Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 96 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.
Who Wears #96?
Tre Kelly-Rice, a redshirt junior defensive end who walked on this spring after transferring from Newberry College last year, will suit up with #96 for the Gamecocks this coming season. But #96 was actually the number that Kelcy Quarles was set to be given when he very first joined the team–after spending 2010 at Fork Union Military Academy and enrolling at South Carolina, he had to settle for #99 since #96 was taken.
Gamecocks football in 1996
This year, it looked like things were progressing for the Gamecocks as they shook off a 4-6-1 campaign in 1995 to finish above .500 and 3rd in the SEC East.
Record: 6-5 (4-4)
Head Coach: Brad Scott
Big Wins: #22 Clemson on November 23, 34-31 at Memorial Stadium.
Also in 1996…
The number one song was “Macarena” by Los Del Rio. (Feeling old?)
Independence Day was the #1 movie.
The Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta.
