After a slow start at the plate, a six-run sixth in support of solid South Carolina Gamecocks pitching was just what the doctor ordered.
That led to an easy 8-0 win at home against Davidson, the team’s 12th shutout of the year and their third win in a row following a five-game losing streak.
The Gamecocks (31-10) sent a total of five pitchers to the hill. But it didn’t matter who was out there because the Wildcats’ offense struggled.
So did the Gamecocks to start. They had several chances to put up runs in the first five innings before hanging up a six spot in the sixth inning. And when it was all said and done, eleven Gamecocks came up to bat as the first five men reached base in the inning.
Starter Reed Scott scattered five hits in four innings before giving way to the Gamecocks bullpen–which was lights out the rest of the way. An eighth-inning single allowed by Josh Reagan was the only blemish as he, Taylor Widener (3.0 IP of perfect relief for the win), John Parke and Hunter Privette combined for five innings of one-hit relief while walking no batters as they completely shut down Davidson (23-11).
Despite the eight runs, no Gamecock had more than one hit, and only Grayson Greiner had multiple RBI (two). Still, for a team that looks to continue to shake off a tough stretch, their third straight win (and only the third time in the last ten games in which they’ve scored five or more runs) hopefully gives them some momentum heading into the final fifteen games of the season.
Carolina is right back at it tomorrow as USC Upstate comes to town. First pitch is at 7pm.
