Step into the G&C time machine with us as we take you to February 24, 2013, the day the South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team did something that hadn’t been done since 1975.

Never mind that the Gamecocks beat the Albany Great Danes, 14-1, in a non-league affair at Carolina Stadium. It was how they did it that was significant. In that game (part of a doubleheader), three Carolina pitchers–Colby Holmes, Forrest Koumas, and Josh Knab–teamed up to pitch the program’s first no hitter since Ray Lavigne did it in 1975 (the second of consecutive no-nos) and the seventh overall.

Albany’s run scored in the 4th, as a walk, throwing error and sac fly actually gave them the lead over the Gamecocks. But a nine-run fifth was all Carolina needed to put this one to bed.

Holmes took the win as he went six strong–giving up the unearned run while walking one and striking out three. Koumas walked three while Knab pitched a perfect ninth to end the game and complete the feat.

All in all, not a bad day in the office. The Gamecocks, by the way, weren’t able to replicate what the 1975 team did (win the College World Series), but they still went 43-20 and advanced to the Super Regional, where they fell to cross-border foe North Carolina.
