Gamecock Nation Morning Links
The Head Ball Coach watched his team run through its first scrimmage yesterday, and because of that, this is going to be a football heavy “Morning Links”.
Steve Spurrier described the scrimmage as average, but had some nice things to say about a few new guys:
“Several players played very well,” continued the Gamecocks’ eighth-year coach. “Defensively, a lot of guys, the pass rushers, were very good as usual. Kaiwan Lewis, a linebacker, was flying around out there making tackles. I know he was impressive. The other freshmen on offense, Shaq Roland caught everything that came his way. Jerell Adams had an excellent scrimmage also.”
In conjuction with MySanAntonio.com, “express-news” college football writer Tim Griffin has been ranking his top 25 teams. He puts the Gamecocks at 14.
“BCS bound if: The offense improves with Lattimore’s return, and the defense plays as well as last season’s stout unit. Doomed for December bowl if: A retooled offensive line doesn’t emerge, Lattimore’s recovery isn’t complete, and the special teams struggle.”
Gamecocks beat writer Darryl Slater says there’s a lot of playing time at WR behind Ace Sanders:
“The most experienced options are sophomores Damiere Byrd and Bruce Ellington, junior DeAngelo Smith and senior D.L. Moore, whose career catches are 1, 17, 4 and 32, respectively. Byrd and Ellington, who are 5-9, possess prodigious speed. Smith and Moore are bigger targets, 6-1 and 6-5.”
