Opening night against Vanderbilt is right around the corner for Gamecock Nation, but football isn’t the only sport making news in Columbia right now.

Soccer is about to get underway, and on the women’s side of things, Carolina is expected to do well:

“The Southeastern Conference (SEC) coaches have selected No. 24 South Carolina to finish second in the SEC Eastern Division this year along with Georgia, the conference office announced Thursday”

The men are also expected to do well this year:

“The South Carolina men’s soccer team, led by veteran head coach Mark Berson in his 35th season, was picked to finish first in the 2012 Conference USA Preseason Poll, while junior forward Bradlee Baladez was selected to the 13-member Men’s Soccer Preseason All-Conference Team for the second-consecutive season”

If you hadn’t been keeping up with them, former Gamecocks Lashinda Demus and Jason Richardson have been doing pretty well in the Summer Olympics. Now, they have medals:

“Former Gamecocks Lashinda Demus and Jason Richardson both claimed silver Wednesday in London to bring the South Carolina track and field Olympic medal count up to 13 since the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.”

Here’s some Twitter news about former Gamecocks Melvin Ingram and Alshon Jeffery showing out in their first ever NFL action:
