Steve Spurrier, Kevin Sumlin exchange jabs at respective press conferences

The SEC’s newest rivalry is off to a fast start, and Steve Spurrier and Kevin Sumlin are in each other’s crosshairs.

South Carolina and Texas A&M are new permanent cross division rivals as arranged by the powers that be in Birmingham, AL. The first annual game between the two took place only a month ago, leaving the Aggies on top of game one, 52-28, in front of a shocked Gamecock crowd.

During his weekly press conference, Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier was asked about SEC scoring/offensive leaders.

"“That’s misleading … Most of these teams play somebody like Lamar.”"

Texas A&M beat Lamar on September 6th, 73-3, and leads the conference in total offense, points per game, passing, and receiving. It’s pretty clear to who Spurrier is referring to.

Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin, when learning of Spurrier’s comments, fired back at the Hall of Fame coach.

"“Keep hearing people think we haven’t played anybody. I think they forgot about the first week.”"

Ouch.

This new annual match-up is off to an entertaining start .Sumlin and Spurrier are not the ones to hold anything back, both no strangers to verbal poking. Spurrier has a lifetime of ripping other coaches on his resume, but the butt whipping Sumlin gave him only a month ago stands tall and is hard to argue against.  It should only get better between these two schools and these two coaches, and there’s plenty of time between now and the second meeting in 2015 to get some more press conference punches.
