South Carolina vs. Georgia: Inside the Numbers

facebooktwitterreddit

Each week before the game, we try to find some information fans might need to know, so with the South Carolina Gamecocks and eorgia Bulldogs playing this Saturday afternoon, we look inside the numbers of this SEC matchup.  This rivalry definitely creates a lot of different numbers to look at and each team’s fans can find a way to spin them in their favor based on the last 10 years results.

More from South Carolina Football

17 – players from the state of Georgia on the Gamecocks roster.  A lot of these guys grew up watching the Bulldogs play, or maybe even imagining playing for them, so the game will have additional significance for them and probably their families.

14 – consecutive number of games between these two teams that has been nationally televised, going back to 1997.

20 – the number of years since Georgia scored more than that against the Gamecocks at Williams Brice, when they won 24-21

122 – Gamecocks’ FBS rank in total passing yards allowed so far (out of 124 teams)

3 – number of previous starts by Bulldog redshirt senior quarterback Hutson Mason.

320 – yards passing by Mason in Gator Bowl against Nebraska last year.  Although many fans may look at the Bulldogs’ first game against Clemson to see Mason’s statistics, he clearly has more ability than was shown in their first game this year.

8 – yards per carry on more than 40 attempts by UGA running backs in their first game against Clemson, totaling more than 325 yards

7 – quarterback hurries by the Gamecocks last week against ECU, one of which led to an interception by Sharrod Golightly

9 – UGA IX is the official mascot for the Georgia Bulldogs, an English Bulldog who been involved for five years, but official for the last two

22 – South Carolina’s rank in passing yards per game this season. Dylan Thompson has started each game amped up and a little off target, but both games has settled in to be incredibly efficient.

5 – number of times South Carolina has won in the nine games in which both teams were ranked in the top 25 (which they are this year)

None of these numbers will matter come 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon, but will give the 85,000 plus fans something to think about as the get ready for another big game in this growing rivalry.
