Gamecocks vs. Aggies: Kevin Sumlin Discusses Texas A&M Win

I’m sure that anyone who watched Texas A&M dismantle South Carolina 52-28 last night could guess head coach Kevin Sumlin’s demeanor and even could imagine how good he felt about how his quarterback and team played.

A&M quarterback Kenny Hill went from question mark to possible Heisman candidate after throwing for more than 500 yards. Ultimately, even with everything the Aggies accomplished in the past two seasons, Kevin Sumlin may have earned more respect and admirers after last night’s performance, because it did not include the quarterback everyone assumed was what made them great.

When asked about Kenny Hill’s performance tonight, Sumlin stated “his demeanor was good” and that he “operated well”.  He then talked about his team’s inexperience and how that played out by saying, “we had a bunch of very young guys who played well tonight; our coaches had a great plan, they executed, and it looked like they had fun doing it”.  No surprise there when you beat the #9 team in the nation at their home, ending their 18 game home win streak by scoring 52 points. What players wouldn’t have fun doing that?

It seemed like the entire team played with a chip on their shoulder all night long and it was obvious Sumlin felt the same, saying, “We came in this game, no one gave us a chance; I think what we proved is that we’re not a one-trick pony”. He continued by saying, “I’m certainly encouraged by coming in here, a place that hadn’t lost in 18 games, and for these guys to come in here, handle this atmosphere, played the way they played, and if we continue to get better, who knows what we can do”.

Many people have been skeptical of how well Texas A&M would be after losing their Heisman quarterback, and it seems as though the coach and possibly the entire team may be using that as a form of motivation. On Twitter last night, ESPN host Colin Cowherd went one step further talking about Sumlin’s success:

Sumlin said many times that “teams improve the most from week one to week to and we have a lot to improve on”, but if the coach is right and they improve the most all season in the next week, you have to wonder how good Texas A&M might really be.
