Steve Spurrier takes swipe at Big Ten

Practice is in full swing for the South Carolina Gamecocks, and we have been treated to some more goodness from Steve Spurrier.

Today, it’s a quote from Spurrier that raised eyebrows when he said that East Carolina was an easier opponent than most schools in the Big Ten:

"“The Big 5 conferences all playing each other, I don’t think that makes a lot of sense, really…Out of conference, playing East Carolina is a lot tougher game than maybe picking up one of those bottom Big Ten teams.”"

To frame it up for context, you have to look at what Spurrier meant when he referred to “those bottom Big Ten teams”. The Pirates finished 10-3 and won the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl last year. The three teams at the bottom of each division in the Big Ten finished with worse records than ECU, but they play in a better conference depth-wise than The American. (And, as ESPN mentioned, only two teams finished with better records.)

That’s why we love the Ole Ball Coach. He’s never shy of some good soundbites. And they’ll be sure to keep coming the closer we get to the season.

By the way, the Pirates visit Williams-Brice Stadium on September 6.
