South Carolina Gamecocks Football Countdown: 24 Days
By Sydney Hunte
Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 24 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.
Who wears #24: D.J. Smith, freshman CB
While Sidney Rhodes and Rico McWilliams entered practice as the starting corners, you’d have to think that Smith will be able to contribute to the secondary sooner rather than later. A four-star recruit coming out of high school (Walton HS in Marietta, GA, G.A. Mangus’s old stomping grounds), Smith entertained offers from Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss and others before settling on the Gamecocks.
What 24 days means
It means that practice is in full swing in Columbia. Almost everyone is in town participating in workouts, position battles, and preparing themselves for the big showdown in three and a half weeks.

Record: 7-3 (4-1 Southern)
Coach: Sol Metzger
Scoring came at a premium this year: the Gamecocks only scored twelve an outing (being shut out three times and scoring more than seven points in just five games). Good thing their defense was on point, though: they allowed just 4.8 a game while pitching five shutouts and holding opponents to seven points or less in seven games. In fact, no team scored more than eighteen points on the Gamecocks all season ling.
