Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 82 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.

Who Wears #82?

No Gamecock will wear the number 82 this season, but wide receiver Kwinton Smith wore the number in 2013. The Dillon native was set to enter his redshirt sophomore season, but decided to transfer in March. During his Gamecock career, Smith played in 11 games and caught five passes for 42 yards. Smith also tried out for the Gamecock baseball team during his time in Columbia, but did not make the final roster.

Gamecocks football in 1982

1982 was Richard Bell’s only season as head coach of the Gamecocks. South Carolina opened the year 2-0, including a season-opening win over Pacific that featured a 101-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Harry Skipper. The play is the second-longest defensive touchdown in Gamecock history. However, South Carolina lost seven of its final nine games and Bell did not return for the 1983 season. He was replaced by Joe Morrison, who would preside over one of the most successful periods in Gamecock football history.
