Our countdown to the 2014 college football season continues as just 85 days separate us from kickoff between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium on August 28.

Who Wears #85?
For the second consecutive season, the number 85 will be worn by wide receiver Kane Whitehurst. The transfer from Arkansas caught four passes for 66 yards in his first season with the Gamecocks. Two of his catches went for touchdowns, including one against his former team. After seeing spot-duty at receiver and getting some time in on special teams, Whitehurst will hope for more playing time in 2014.

Gamecocks football in 1985

Following the magical 1984 season, South Carolina struggled mightily in 1985. After beginning the year 2-0, the Gamecocks were 15th in the polls. However, a 34-3 home loss to 19th-ranked Michigan was just the beginning of a long, frustrating season. South Carolina was beaten 42-7 by Pittsburgh, 56-14 by Florida State. The Gamecocks did gain a measure of revenge against Navy, the team that ruined their undefeated season a year earlier, before dropping a 24-17 decision to Clemson to close out the season with a losing record.
