It’s almost time for the greatest season of all.  No, it’s not Christmas.  It’s football season.  With the smell of football in the air, Garnet and Cocky will be counting down the days to kickoff with different stories, player profiles, game previews, and flashbacks.  South Carolina fans have much to look forward to this year, and here at Garnet and Cocky we believe that we should nudge that anticipation inside of each Gamecock fan.

For the first edition of “Countdown to Kickoff,” we remember Steve Spurrier.  The Ole Ball Coach, has brought about a culture change at the University of South Carolina.  While it took a few more seasons than originally anticipated, the previous three seasons have been the culmination of Gamecock fan’s desires.

Steve Spurrier has broken the mold that his teams have traditionally fit into.  While Spurrier was at Florida, it was all about the “Fun-N-Gun” offense.  While there has been glimpses of such offense over the past few years at Williams-Brice, the calling card for the Gamecocks has been stout defense.

Spurrier has been able to adapt and overcome to lead South Carolina to 32 wins in the past three seasons.  Winning eleven games in each of the past two seasons, Spurrier has even become the winningest coach in South Carolina history.  Spurrier has not only had double-digit win seasons three years running, he has defeated Clemson four consecutive years.   As fans look forward to the upcoming season, it is important to remember that coach Spurrier is still hungry and ready to lead this Gamecock football team to another “first” – an SEC Championship.
